What the heck, Sesame Street!?

Let me start this off by saying, yet again, Vivien and I are not morning people. For some reason, Sesame Street just wasn’t on my radar. Maybe because it’s on PBS, and…well…I typically watch the “higher up channels” such as Bravo, E! and TLC. You know, the quality programming.

We went over to a friends house a couple weeks ago, and they had the Sprout channel on TV. That’s not included in our package, so I didn’t know that Sesame Street was a regular thing on the Sprout channel. Vivien had never seen S.S. before, and was watching it and dancing around to it like crazy. She loved it!

I really try not to let Vivien watch TV all day long  because that’s my job, however, I will typically flip it on before a nap time or when she’s eating lunch to “wind down.” She’ll sit and snuggle with me, and watch it for a bit.

So I found the PBS channel, and recorded the Sesame Street series, since let’s face it, I am not going to go out of my way to wake up at 9am and watch it. We sat down, and I flipped it on, and she loved it. And I noticed some odd (slightly famous?) guest stars.

Uhm, aren’t you supposed to be hanging out with Justin Timberlake practicing your SNL skits? Your mustache creeps me out. Like, I’d probably scream if I saw you talking to my kid.

Leonard?! You’re an experimental physicist, why are you talking to puppets?! Maybe you should have let Penny be on Sesame Street, and stop stealing all the thunder. She’s the actress want-to-be, you have a real job.

Am I just an idiot, and never realized before that slightly-famous people frequent Sesame Street? Honestly, I don’t think I’ve watched the show in a really long time (I don’t remember watching it with my nephew.)

Then I started wondering, what B list actors were on S.S. when I was little?!

Obviously, I’m over-thinking this program. She liked it. I was amused by it, so it was a win-win.

Do you allow your toddler to watch TV? What are their favorite shows?

  • I’m slightly distracted by all those contraptions anchored across the top of your TV… but getting to the point ;) , there are ALL kinds of famous people on Sesame Street and I didn’t realize it till I bought LW the “40 days of Sunny Days” DVD at Target… like Alicia Keys serenading Elmo (it happened). HOWEVER, Leonard? I did not know about this… but Hubby will get a “kick out of it”!

Hahahaha! Right?! To explain my TV toppers, we have the XBox kinect, and also the wii sensor mounted on top of that (my husband ordered the holder thing off the internet.)
We also have a webcam on the right, because my TV has it’s own “media computer” attached, where we watch things downloaded off the computer, or hulu, or netflix, or whatever. We also skype with it (hence the webcam)
      Whew!

  • My husband got my toddler hooked on the PBS Kid’s app on the iPhone. Then, my MIL introduced Yo Gabba Gabba into the house on Netflix Streaming. Those two options seem to keep the kiddo happy. No commercials and we try to limit the screen time to an hour or two a day. Just when we need to get something done…

And don’t get me started on how well my two-year-old works the iPhone. It’s scary.

  • There have always been famous people. I think that just having watched it as a kid, I didn’t actually care because Big Bird, Oscar, Burt, etc. were the real stars in my eyes.

  • We love Sesame Street around here. Or did until my son discovered Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, ha. But yeah they have lots of famous people on. They have had Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and more on too. I think it’s kind of fun! At least it keeps me interested during it, haha. I think I remember Whoopi Goldberg and Stevie Wonder on when I was little. Maybe they do it more now though. Funny to think about it though now as an adult :)

It’s Elmo’s world or nothing to mine. She loves Mr. Noodle and screams “nunu!” When he appears. We do about and hour total max a day but some days none. Its usually in 20 minute incraments as that’s all she has patience for and really only to let mommy sit down for like…a minute to regroup. Sometimes its just one song after another.

And we watch it all on youtube because they have full episodes.

  • There are three shows M loves. Little Einsteins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Special Agent Oso. My DVR has more kids shows than my shows on it right now. But she has a special place in her heart for Elmo, just the character not so much the sesame street.

  • Sprout is like, the best thing in our lives. It’s the only channel I let Benjamin watch (ahem… aside from NBC for the Today Show and KLG & Hoda). Of course, he’s obsessed with The Wiggles, which we know. Sesame Street is never on when I have Sprout on, but he likes it. I actually enjoy the Goodnight Show – it’s pretty relaxing. Noodle & Doodle is kind of fun, but the crafts are always shitty. Like, making art projects out of total trash, and asking parents/aunts/uncles/grandparents to hang it up in their house. I get it – my kid isn’t old enough for me to be proud of his hideous crafts, but the Noodle & Doodle craft projects always seem extra heinous. Caillou is probably the most annoying child on TV. And I LOATHE Lazy Town. Loathe.

Umm… so what’s that you said about letting toddlers watch TV? Hahaha – clearly, YES, I do, but we are cutting back! ;-)
